Ahhh, The Possibilities!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

I’ve been trying to plan regular times when I can make forays to the local thrift stores to search for unique (and cheap!) crafting supplies, items that just need a little TLC to be loved again and things I can “upcycle” in to something new.  I’ve scored big lately on finding pretty decent picture frames I can rework in to door decor, home decor and message or inspiration boards.  So, I’m making a solid plan to hit up the thrift stores that are within easy driving distance from where I work on a more regular basis.  My lunch hour is perfect for making a quick stop to any of the several stores that are fairly close to my office.  Today’s trip took me to Goodwill where I scored the funkiest, 70′s era monstrosity of a lamp you have EVER seen.  I spied it while perusing the shelves for some glass globes I can make yard lighting out of, and HAD to have it so badly that I almost ran a guy over with my shopping cart in my haste!  Seriously, check out the funkiness:  (feel free to ignore my mess of a garage.  Supplies for several projects are lurking in there….and probably a mouse or two!)

70's Kitsch

Awesomesauce!

Bring on the funk!

I cannot begin to tell you how GREAT this lamp is, and I know the pictures don’t do it justice.  It’s really something you just have to experience in person!  The lights inside vary in height, I guess to resemble candles, and the glass panels are removable so you can reach in to change the bulbs.  I can’t WAIT to get started cleaning this up and refurbishing it!  I’ll let y’all know how it turns out!

And….We’re Back!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

I made a reference on Facebook a few weeks ago about my website and blog crashing on me!  Not an experience I recommend, just trust me on this.  Anyway, the blog is back and I’ve finally finished uploading the pictures that didn’t make it back online.  Some of them are obviously missing still, so if you see a post where I’ve said there’s a picture…but there’s not one….you’ll know what happened!  Anyway, still some things to do, but for the most part I’m back online, yay!  I’m making the blog my main site for now, and will be uploading more pics of my products, but that’s a project for next weekend, I think.  Have a great Sunday, everyone!

My First Ever Show!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

I’ve been making candles for quite some time, and until now selling them to friends, family, coworkers, etc.  I decided to go to the next level and will be renting retail space in a antiques/craft mall set to open in town in the next few months.  I’m really looking forward to that, and I’m excited about the many changes our small town has seen recently.  We’re experiencing a revitalization of our previously rundown and abandoned downtown area.  New shops and restaurants are opening, more people are shopping in town rather than going to other areas, and the “square” itself  is more inviting and presents a much better image.  I think it’s only going to improve over the coming months.  Today marked the “Grand Opening” of Historic Downtown Princeton, which included an art walk, live music, food, a wine tasting, and more.  I set up a table at the art walk and had my first ever craft show!  It was pretty fun, and a real learning experience for me.  The tables were free, so the money I made was gravy, but I was really more interested in getting my name out there and meeting people.  I’d say it was successful in that regard.  I didn’t make a whole lot, but I did learn a lot!

Here are some pictures of my table!

The banner was a quick craft project, it’s sheets of styrofoam cut into triangles, covered with scrapbooking paper and letters I printed off the internet.  I had planned to clothespin them to fishing line tied across the front of the canopy.  That didn’t work out quite as I’d hoped because the styrofoam is thicker than the clothespins would open!  Ooops. :)   We made it work, but I’ll have to come up with something different for next time.  I actually think I’m going to do the same thing again, except I’ll use foam core instead of styrofoam.  A little pricier, but they’ll also last longer.

Table layout

The tablecloths were some cheap, plastic ones I got from the local party supply store.  They have the CUTEST stuff in there!  We used boxes under them to produce different levels to add a little interest to the table layout.  I had the baskets already, I have tons of them in my garage, so we filled them with crinkle paper to set the soaps out in.  Each one has a different scent, too, so it kept them kind of organized as well as being visually appealing.  The tables are two 4-foot folding tables set next to each other.  One is mine and the other I borrowed.

A closer look!

Overall, I don’t think I did too badly, considering I was doing this on the cheap and using borrowed stuff!  I am going to spray paint that tiny red basket, it has my business cards in it.  I love that it’s the perfect size for them, but it SO doesn’t match my packaging!  I’m going to look for a blue that closely matches my labels, or I’ll go for black.

So, that’s my story!  What do you think of my table?  Any suggestions for improvements?  I know it’s rather short on product.  I had more stuff with me, I just didn’t lay all of it out.  Do you like how it looks?  Is the layout appealing?  Leave me a comment!

Thanks for stopping by.  And let’s all say a prayer tomorrow for those who lost their lives on 9/11, their loved ones and survivors, first responders and our troops around the world.

Sugar Scrubs, Yay!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

I’ve been struggling with finding a sugar scrub recipe that I really liked, and even tweaking ones I found on the Internet wasn’t working for me….until a couple weeks ago.  As I tweeted a few days back, I’ve finally found a winner!

Ooooo! I finally found a sugar scrub recipe I like! It’s a winner!

Not too oily, because I don’t like salt and sugar scrubs that are basically vats of oil, with a cup of sugar thrown in to save you from just pouring oil all over yourself.  Not that there’s anything wrong with pouring oil on yourself, or someone else………ok, this post is going in a different direction than originally intended.  :)   My point is, despite my roundabout way of getting to it, is that the product is called a SCRUB….so I think it should actually help with exfoliation, as the name implies.  The oil contained in it is great, and I want the skin softening effect, too, but let’s don’t forget the reason I’m buying a scrub to begin with!  So, as previously mentioned, the recipe I’m using is scrubby, but not TOO scrubby, and has just enough oil to soften, but not so much that my shower looks like something I’m going to have to call the EPA’s cleanup crews out for.  It’s easy to make, easy to scent, throw it in the jar, and it’s done.  Can’t beat that!  Here’s a pic (I know, it’s just the jars….boring.  Next time I make some I’ll take more detailed pictures of every step, but I didn’t think to do it this time….sorry!)

Better pics next time, I promise! :)

So, that’s been my Sunday so far.  Now I’m off to put my carpet shampooer together so I can clean carpets and then head out to the grocery store to fill our bare pantry!  How’s your Sunday?

And MORE New Soaps!

Posted by: | Comments (3)

The soap molds I mentioned yesterday are really working out great.  I like them so far, although I do need to figure out the lining issue.  I think I’m going to try parchment paper next time, as the plastic wrap I’ve been using is not really working for me.

I made more soaps, which I’m very pleased with!  These came out a little bigger because I used more soap base than the first batch.  The molds hold up to 5 pounds of MP soap base, and I used the full capacity this time.  The first batch was only 4 pounds of base.  These are Coconut Lime Verbena.  What do you think?

Here are a couple of pictures of the finished product.  I like how these turned out even better than the first batch.  I can’t wait to make more soaps with my new loaf molds!  I’m planning to make a coffee-scented “kitchen” soap with embedded coffee grounds, and some lavender with, of course, lavender buds in it!  I’m not sure how I’m going to accomplish embedding botanicals in my soaps, but I’ll figure it out!

And here are a couple pictures of the molds, I thought you might be interested in seeing them.

I got a set of 3 molds and each holds 4 – 5 pounds of soap base.  One of the molds has a slot cut in it for slicing the soap.  My next big project is going to be making a soap slicer, tho, because slicing is hell!  :)

You can see the wing nuts a little better in this one.  They’re used to tighten up the long screws that run through each end and the middle to keep the sides snug against the bottom and ends.  The mold fully disassembles for taking the finished soap out.

Well, there you go!  Once again, have a happy and safe Memorial Day!

New Soaps!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

I bought some new loaf style soap molds on eBay and yesterday was the first time I got to try them out.  I made some Pomegranate Sage soaps, and I think they turned out quite well!

These are going to be part of my first consignment items at CJ’s in Princeton.  If you’re in the area, come check them out, it’s a cute boutique downtown on 4th St.

Have a safe, happy Memorial Day weekend, y’all.  And please let’s all remember the reason for the holiday.  Freedom isn’t free, some of us gave their all so the rest could enjoy.

Venues and More…

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Lately I’ve been researching several venues for selling handmade crafts.  Everyone’s familiar with Etsy, and most people with ArtFire.  You’ll notice I have shops at both and not a thing listed in either, LOL!  Such a slacker!)

There are a couple of lesser-known places I’m thinking about opening a storefront in, also.  One I recently came across is Zibbet, which looks pretty interesting.  I haven’t researched the details yet; transaction fees, monthly fees, etc., because I just found it a couple days ago.  I like the site itself, tho, it’s inviting!  There’s also Bonanza, which I’m still a little confused about.  I’m hoping I have time this week to check the site out a little more, too.

I’m taking part in The Little Black Box’s May sample box.  Check them out, they’re just GREAT and always packed full of wonderful handmade items.  Go handmade!  There are other sample boxes I’m considering participating in, as well.  I’ve been ordering from different companies, trying to see which ones I think will fit me.  So far I’ve received a box from My Dream Party and it was filled to the brim with all kinds of goodies.  I really liked it!  I’m considering Sampler Village, Sweet Delight Divalicious (really LOVE the name, ha!), Out of the Box, Crafty Sampler, Spotted Box, My Pretty Pink Box, Tantalizing Sampler, and SampleZ Box (this one is for Zibbet sellers, so if I open a shop there I’ll participate).  Over the next few months, I’ll be ordering from each of these so I can decide which ones I think will work best for me.  The great thing is that it’s so fun to get these sample boxes, it’s hardly work at all!  I do have to remind myself that I’m supposed to pay attention to the presentation, the ordering ease, how the experience of ordering and receiving the box went, the samples contained, etc.  It’s so like Christmas, tho.  Do you like getting sample boxes?  If so, which have you tried that you really liked and had a good experience with?  Which boxes would you order again and again?

I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe Easter!

Long time, no see!

Well, more eBay listings got put up today!  I have more stuff to list, but it’s going to have to wait, I’m on my way out to run some errands.  Check out my store, there’s a link to the right, or you can click here!

There’s a small boutique style store in my town called CJ’s which I’m going to check out later and possibly rent some space in!  I’m excited to do this, I’ve been wanting to find some retail space for a while now, but nothing was coming together for me.  I’m hoping this is a sign of future great things, so wish me luck!  I’m taking a small gift basket I made with me, I hope they like my stuff!

I’ve got lots of ideas for my blog and for Walking Leaf Co., I just seem to be lacking the time to implement them!  Or maybe it’s my time management skills that are lacking!  Either way, I will be trying to do much better in the future.  Keep an eye out for me!

Happy Easter, all!
